5th grade: Going Green video ideas

School: Gymnasium Essen-Werden
City: Essen-Werder
Class/Course: 5e
Teacher(s): Karsten Brill

Our Plan:

5th graders (age: 10) were asked to take their own look at the environment and how to help to sustain the planet. They discussed the topic from different angles in English, Geography and Biology classes, went on a trip to the zoo in Gelsenkirchen, researched various topics and came up with their very own ideas:

1. small things everyone can do in everyday life

2. geo caching

3. What needs to change

4. Do's and don't's

A Song and Stickers to make people aware

School: Goethe Gymnasium
City: Frankfurt am Main
Class/Course: 7
Teacher(s): Anne von Rekowski

Our Plan:

1. Going Green Project Song

1. Identifying possible causes and effects of a problem:

Possible causes and their effects:

Pollution of the oceans.

-The fish die and the water gets dirty.

Too much traffic.

-The carbon dioxide is getting stronger

The plastic production gets bigger every year.

-We pollute the earth with more garbage which is hard to get rid of.

2. Identifying the underlying problem:

We are so bad to the environment because some people aren't even thinking about the nature. For example deforestation. Most of the people know, that it's really bad for the environment but the still do it because they get money for it. Actually money is a big reason why we are like that. Plastic is useful but really cheap and glass for example is more expensive. That's why plastic is in at least everyone's home. And of course the people who make this plastic get really much money and they keep on producing more and more plastic.

3. Brainstorming potential solutions:

We could produce less plastic, for example less plastic bags and more cotton bags.

Find volunteers who will help clean for example the oceans

Start using more renewable energy and less nuclear or coal energy

Eat and buy more food from the region

Make people aware of the problem

4. Developing criteria for evaluating solutions:

Produce less plastic -> If we produce less plastic we can stop for example the pollution in the oceans and there won't be that much dead fish and other dead animals.

Volunteers to clean the oceans -> We think that there will be a lot of people who'd like to help clean the oceans. It could be an inspiration for others who'd also like to help.

Renewable energy -> the nuclear waste is one big problem. It's really difficult to get rid of it and it's very toxic to people and most of the people and animals die because of the nuclear waste. It's also responsible for the carbon dioxide which gets stronger every year.

Food from the region -> food from the region is much better than imported food, because the food is mostly from far away and it needs a long way to come to Germany. So the planes also produce lots of carbon dioxide.

5. Evaluating solutions to determine the best one:

All the ideas mentioned above are very big and need lots of resources that we cannot provide. However if lots of people get involved, they will be able to make the world a little bit better. So our idea is to make people aware of the fact that the world’s resources need to be treated with care and that everyone should live a more sustainable life. Therefore we wrote a catchy song. Every time people listen to it they are reminded to start helping the environment.

6. Developing an action plan:

We already wrote a catchy song about the consequences of pollution. We now try to make the song famous with the help of the Going Green competition and after that via youtube and social networks. If people like the song it might get viral and serve as a constant reminder that the world is dying from the way we treat it and that everyone needs to help saving our planet. If even a few people change their behaviour from time to time the world will become a better place.

Going Green Song

I woke up with a feeling

'Cause ev'rybody's stealin

The nature that we're tryin' to heal

'Cause ev'ryone thinks it's made of steel

Did you ever ask yourself

What about the worlds health?

And did you ever think about

The opportunity to help?

Look at the world

Look at the trash

Look at all we've done in the past

Don't you see this mess we've made?

Don't you want to help at last?

Create the world you want to see

What do you want to change?

It's your decision what you'll be

How is that so strange?

Have you ever heard the world

Screaming and shouting for help?

And did you ever think about

The opportunity to help?

Look at the world

Look at the trash

Look at all we've done in the past

Don't you see this mess we've made?

Don't you want to help at last?

In 2000 years the world will break

You really wanna put that at stake?

A lot of changes we'll have to make

A lot of risks we'll have to take

If we carry on like this

It'll be too late

Look at the world

Look at the trash

Look at all we've done in the past

Don't you see this mess we've made?

Don't you want to help at last?

Just help

Just help

At last

Act locally: Our Bike Day, our Donation to the Peace Village in Oberhausen and Teaching Refugees

School: Gymnasium Alsdorf
City: Alsdorf
Class/Course: Q1 und Schülervertretung
Teacher(s): Anissa Schiffer

Our Plan:

Bike Day - Unfortunately the Going Green Team of our school (Gymnasium der Stadt Alsdorf) discovered quite a lot students (one third) take the bus for a short distance, their parents drive them or they use their own car to get to school. These results are alarming!!! You should think globaly and act locally! The Going Green team and the SV took care of the realization of a Bike Day. We searched for sponsors and plenty organizations were willing to support the initiative to prevent exhaust fumes. The students noticed the upcoming Bike Day through posters and announcements. This lead to discussions and interest among the classes. We made it a competition with prizes to motivate the students. 207 students participated in the competition. Since we are a small school this number was a great success. The feedback of our headmaster, teachers and students was so encouraging that we want to have another Bike Day this summer.

Donating Clothes

If we turn on the television or read the newspaper, almost daily images of war and terror, of destroyed houses, injured people, of senseless destruction and boundless misery dominate our news. Such images are the reality for innocent children. That is why we wanted to help. We wrote a letter to all parents and students of our school and informed about the action of our Going GreenTeam – donating clothes. The entire donation was taken to the Peace Village in Oberhausen. There children stay an average of six months to be treated by doctors and can forget the war at home for some time. We have moved many to be active.

Teaching refugees

The number of people forced to flee their homes has reached record levels. We spontaneously felt that it is also part of Going Green to think about integration. We started informing other students who were willing to help, some of them with knowledge of the Arabic language or speaking Arabic themselves. Volunteers (teachers and students) taught German from October to December at our school.  Switching from German to English to Arabic and back was a big challenge.

On our own website we present information about all our actions for example the ongoing project of installing a water dispenser. You will find personal challenges, interviews (skype-conferences), photos of our actions, powerpoint presentations on different topics, articles (links to newspaper articles), etc. Enjoy! http://analytic-systems.de/wordpress/

Alsdorf goes Green - Think Globally, Act Locally

School: Dalton-Gymnasium
City: Alsdorf
Class/Course: 12, Bilingual Project Course with American exchange students
Teacher(s): Anissa Schiffer

Our Plan:

Many actions in school and families to raise awareness

Implementation:

We have created a blog with many different media: For example we drew cartoons and shot three films. All have been presented in school at different events.

We tried to reach the public as much as possible. We inform our students about our actions all the time with our blog, via posters and our school monitors.

To have a greater influence, we talked to politicians, the manager of the ENERGETICON and Mr Stüber, who is a reporter from our local newspaper "Aachener Zeitung".

Take a look at our blog to see what we have achieved already. Especially our participation in a penal discussion at a free town meeting was successful.

We have started challenges to inspire other students and many of them engaged in the project by donating clothes to the Friedensdorf in Oberhausen. Our goal is to reach more and more people in Alsdorf and convince them to act locally by informing them about undesirable developments. We won't stop now. There is much more we can do to improve our ecological, social and economic actions.

Projektgruppe des Dalton-Gymnasiums erhält RWE-Klimaschutzpeis

Next Step: The efforts and attempts of our Going Green team were rewarded last year with the Going Green Price (750 Euros) and the RWE Klimaschutzpreis. All in all we were able to gather 2500 Euro. This money will be used for the installation of a water dispenser at the new school building. The construction has already started.

Aska Awareness Day

School: Askanisches Gymnasium
City: Berlin
Class/Course: E 31 (Grade 11)
Teacher(s): Matthias Klaudius

Our Plan: The Aska Awareness Day
Action LogoWe are happy to announce that we will host an awareness day at our school, which is going to be all about going green and becoming more sustainable.
Besides presenting the issue and solution ideas of the topics plastic, food, building and fashion, we will organize guided tours through our school to show where our school building turned eco-friendly over the last years and where we are still lacking. To reach our students on a personal level, we will hand out questionnaires to them so everyone has to think about his habits and how he is affecting the environment through his lifestyle. On the awareness day, the evaluated results will be presented to the students.
We want to motivate our guests to become more active and to spread the message. To motivate them, we will explain how to create a makeshift garden at home, host a clothing swap market and show how to re-design old clothes that are this way saved from the trash container. The best recreations and the results of the questionnaire will be featured in our school magazine and we want to inform about our progress on our school web page as well.
With our project, we hope to reach the Aska students and raise awareness for the topic to make a change.
Implementation:

March 2015 - Aska Awareness Day:

Awareness Programme

School: Lycée Francais Victor Hugo
City: Frankfurt am Main
Class/Course: English (grade 11)
Teacher(s): Frederic Morvany

Our Plan:

Air pollution was the focus of our concern.

We looked at the different sources of pollution, compared countries, sources and solutions.

Then we designed posters and display work with on this theme. The colleague who teaches science in English also took part: the students prepared experiments involving plants, polluting material and measuring equipment to show what effects pollution could have on nature, and on us.

Eventually, we came with a host of posters and solutions to reduce air pollution in everyday life.

This was all organized on a one morning event during which middle schoolers and primary school students (all from our school) came to our conference room, where they were taken through a route (science, film, activites such as the living tree, and the solutions posters).
