Dear Subscriber, Some of you are already back in school, others will follow shortly. We hope that you had a relaxing summer and that the new school year will make in-person teaching the new normal again. The reports about climate change seem overwhelming these days, so let’s do what is in our power and engage with our young people to change what we can change: our behavior, our communities, perhaps even our politics. The Teach About US team has been busy over the summer updating information and organizing the re-launch of Going Green – Education for Sustainability. Several classes have already signed up for Going Green 2021-2022! We are building virtual programs around the established Going Green curriculum on TeachAboutUS.org. We will be featuring outstanding speakers and fresh insights into policies, grassroots movements and green themes. Please share the information with your colleagues in other disciplines since many themes cross over into the social sciences as well. Please mark your calendars and join us for the following events in September and early October: 1. Talking Teaching Wednesday, September 22, 17:00-18:00 (virtual) Going Green – Education for Sustainability 2021-2022 A Q&A session with the Teach About US team and our regional partners in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria (in German and English) We will introduce you to our new regional partnership programs Baden-Württemberg meets California and Bavaria meets Georgia and briefly talk about our plans to further develop the Going Green curriculum. TALKING CHANGE Thursday, September 30, 20:00 (virtual) Fireside Chat Women Leadership in Climate Activism – And What We All Can Do to Save Our Planet with Dr. Katharine Wilkinson, author, strategist, and teacher, and Prof. Dr. Catrin Gersdorf, Professor and Chair of American Studies. Time magazine featured Dr. Wilkinson as one of 15 “women who will save the world” and Apolitical named her one of the “100 most influential people in gender policy.” She is co-founder of The All We Can Save Project that supports women leading on climate. Prof. Gersdorf’s research is located at the intersection of American Studies and the Environmental Humanities. Please register here: teachaboutus@leuphana.de. You will receive a link a few days prior to the event. 3. TALKING STUDENTS Please share this information with your students: Study in the U.S? Yes, you can! You are in 10th or 11th grade, and you are dreaming of studying in the U.S.? But you have no clue how to start? Or, you have concerns about financing your education? Join a group of likeminded students, and with the help of EducationUSA prepare for your application. Attend virtual meetings for one year, communicate with members of your group, and learn how to present yourself.
We will use Zoom for the monthly meetings, and Email and Google Classroom for activities and keeping in touch. Two experts from the U.S. Embassy Berlin and the German-American Institute in Heidelberg will accompany and support

LOOKING AHEAD Save the dates for - a virtual program with leading U.S. environmentalist Bill McKibben on October 28, 19:00 - the U.S. Embassy Teacher Academy 2021, November 12-14 currently planned as an in-person event in Potsdam.
