Teach About US Update // July 13, 2018

Dear Subscriber,
As the school year comes to an end, we here at Teach About US would like to extend a warm thank you for your continued engagement and participation in our school projects. This school year, we concluded the fourth installment of Going Green, created new transatlantic partnerships and deepened existing ones, and tried out new, transdisciplinary approaches of teaching English and science with our project week on renewable energies (see below).

Teach About US will be back in the fall with another round of Going Green. And the next election project is already on the horizon, too! The success of our school projects rests with your engagement and creative contributions. We know that many colleagues make extraordinary efforts to implement our school projects in their classes and for this, we simply want to say THANK YOU!

We look forward to seeing you again in the fall (whether online or in person). If you want to stay busy in the meantime, we’d like to draw your attention to the Berlin Airlift creative contest, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce Germany (see below).

We hope you enjoy your well-deserved summer holidays!

Yours,
Joannis Kaliampos
on behalf of the Teach About US Team and Partners

Project Week Award for Students in Neubrandenburg and West Simsbury, CT
Over the last semester, several courses in Germany and the US ‘piloted’ our new project week curriculum “Power to the People”, an interdisciplinary curriculum on renewable energy and community energy planning. We were happy to award a prize to students of Gymnasium Essen-Werden (with teacher Karsten Brill) in the spring during our regular Going Green competition for their contribution, a video-based community energy plan for the fictional city of Leinwig.

A second outstanding contribution – “The Green Future of Leinwig: A Community Energy Plan for Future Cities” – was jointly submitted (for the extended project week deadline) by students at Albert Einstein Gymnasium Neubrandenburg (with teacher Petra Wittner) and The Master’s School in West Simsbury, Connecticut (with teacher Lisa-Brit Wahlberg). The students created a dossier of community-based climate actions including an innovative plan for an underground pumped-water power plant, and presented their proposal in a video. Take a look!
Berlin Airlift Contest (by the American Chamber of Commerce Germany)

Seventy years ago in June, the start of the Berlin Airlift sent an important signal for the post-war transatlantic friendship. At a time when this friendship is no longer taken for granted, today’s young generation has a unique opportunity to shape the future of the German-American partnership.

That's why AmCham Germany is taking the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift as an opportunity to hear from young people like you about what the transatlantic partnership means to them in our Berlin Airlift Contest.

We want to hear from you!

What do you associate with transatlantic relations and how do you live and experience them?

Get creative and send us your essays, reports, poems, short stories, video blogs, radio features or podcasts, and raps. Please view our guidelines for more information.

Quick tip: Submissions can be in English or German, so there is no need to worry about flawless English.

The winners will be honored during a transatlantic evening in Berlin on November 8, 2018, and can look forward to exciting prizes like a return flight to New York for two (first place).

The participation deadline is August 31, 2018.

For German, please view Teilnahmebedinungen.

Outlook 2018/19
Our materials will remain online, and they can be used whenever during the upcoming school year. We would encourage you to share your results with us and post them on the website. You might also want to submit them to the student competition next year (around Earth Day). Enlist during the school year 2018/19. We look forward to beginning the fifth cycle of Going Green in September 2018.
