Teach About US Update // Feb. 16, 2016
|
|
Dear Subscriber,
This month's Teach About US Newsletter features some exciting news and announcements. As of this week, some 550 students have registered on our Teach About US platform in roughly 40 Going Green e-classrooms. Most notably, we would like to express a heartfelt "Willkommen" to our participants from Edina, Minnesota! The students at Edina High School have entered an exchange with their peers at Geschwister Scholl Schule in Saarburg, Rheinland-Pfalz. This is a great first outcome of our U.S. outreach partnership with colleagues at the Goethe Institut's Transatlantic Outreach Program in Washington D.C. and we hope there will be many more to come. These participant numbers reflect the continued interest in the Going Green project and we'd like to highlight again that we have just entered the project's 'hot phase'. It is not too late to join and make Going Green part of your courses! Below are this newsletter's topics – we hope you enjoy reading about them. And, as always, we would like to thank those of you in particular who are participating in Going Green with their students. It is you and your students who bring this project to life!
Yours,
Joannis Kaliampos on behalf of the Teach About US Team and Partners

U.S. Embassy Teacher Academy 2016: Join us on May 5-8
This year's U.S. Embassy Teacher Academy will take place on May 5-8 at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Haus in Berlin Mitte. We will look at the upcoming presidential election in the U.S. and are happy to confirm the following team of experts on the issue:
- Dr. Crister Garrett, Professor of American Culture and History, Leipzig University
- Dr. Renée J. Heberle, Professor of Political Science, University of Toledo
- Dr. David McCuan, Professor of Political Science, Sonoma State University
- Dr. Heike Paul, Professor of American Studies, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg
- Dr. Torben Schmidt, Professor of Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Leuphana University Lüneburg
With our program, we will provide an in-depth insight into American perspectives on the intricacies of the U.S. electoral system and shed some light on the mysteries of this year's campaigns and potential candidates. We will also introduce you to the U.S. Embassy School Election Project 2016 which will start with the new school year. We hope you and your students will be on board for that. A highlight of the Teacher Academy 2016 will most certainly be a reading and discussion with author and journalist Joshua Hammer. Mr. Hammer will talk about his recent work, The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World’s Most Precious Manuscripts (2016).

Going Green to be featured at Hannover Messe
As you might have heard, the USA will be partner country of Hannover Messe 2016 and President Obama will open the fair together with Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Going Green team is very excited about the opportunity to feature our project in the Tech2You exhibition hall.
