Dear teachers,

As the school year resumes in several states, we'd like to update you on the changes we've made to our Moodle course during the break.

We've adjusted the course in response to Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race on July 21 and have now tailored it to focus on the new candidate, Kamala Harris. The course is fully updated and course copies are currently being created so that you will certainly have a Moodle course available by the end of the school vacations in your federal state. Feel free to explore the content through our demo course .

We want to highlight that the course begins with an initial survey, which is crucial for us to improve such projects in the future. The survey takes about 10 minutes, and all data will be processed to Leuphana University anonymously. We would greatly appreciate your participation.

For anyone interested, there will be a Zoom meeting on September 3 at 5:00 PM, where we will present the Moodle course and its content. Additionally, Dr. Philip Habel will give a talk titled "The U.S. Elections 2024 – A Totally New Ball Game."

You can join the meeting using the following link:

Lecture and Discussion

The U.S. Elections 2024 – A Totally New Ball Game | Philip Habel

In April 2024 at the Annual Rostock Teacher Training Seminar, Dr. Habel asked the question: “Why isn’t Joe Biden leading in the polls by 20 points?” Since the beginning of August, this question has turned into: “Who is taking the lead now?” and “Who will be successful: The Harris/Walz or the Trump/Vance ticket?”

On November 5 of this year, U.S. citizens will go to the polls to elect a President and their members of Congress, and to choose candidates for state and local offices. Many believe that 2024 will be one of our most consequential elections. The national campaigns are likely to center on issues such as the economy, immigration, the overturning of Roe v. Wade and abortion access, foreign affairs including the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza, climate, diversity in the U.S including LGBTQ policies, healthcare and Social Security, issues affecting Generation Z---not to forget former President Trump’s legal woes. This talk will provide insight into the campaigns, public opinion polling, party platforms, and the prospects for governance. The talk will also provide attendees with the tools to understand not only the 2024 elections, but future elections, as well as the dynamics of U.S. politics more generally.
